Do You Agree With the President and Bob Costas? Should the 'Redskins' Change Their Name?

"We are Redskins Nation...we owe it to our fans and coaches and players, past and present, to preserve that heritage."

The Washington Redskins are a hot topic right now, especially after Bob Costas' rant Sunday night during "Sunday Night Football." However, the NFL team based in the nation's capital is not making news for its prowess on the football field. The Redskins are "trending" on Twitter and social media outlets because of the team's name. It appears that the push to re-name the Redskins has taken on new life.

  • President Obama would like the team's owners to change the name.
  • D.C.'s Representative in the House, Eleanor Holmes Norton is campaigning to have it changed.
  • Costas used his national TV platform to push for a name change.

On October 9, Redskins owner Dan Snyder addressed the controversy in a letter posted online to "Everyone in our Washington Redskins Nation." In that two page note, Synder explained the history behind the name and quoted the often used poll data showing 90% of Native Americans and 79% of all people are perfectly fine with the name "Redskins." He closed his letter by stating, "We are Redskins Nation...and we owe it to our fans and coaches and players, past and present, to preserve that heritage.

So what do the people of the District of Columbia think? MRC's Dan Joseph asked some residents that question recently. And a majority shown in his video want the team to retain their name:

If you missed Glenn Beck's explanation of the history of the Washington Redskins, we present it here (as seen on TheBlaze TV).
