Literally within hours of the strike, Syrians loyal to Assad were openly celebrating their president's triumph (he was, after all, still the president) and by Sunday Assad's forces had resumed their attacks on civilians -- this time with conventional weapons instead of chemical.

Meanwhile Russia, which has insisted all along that there was never any attack in Douma and accused the West of “staging” the horrific event, have "warned that such actions will not be left without consequences."

China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying also condemned the airstrikes, saying, "Any unilateral military action bypassing the [United Nations] ... violates the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and will further complicate the Syrian issue."

We oppose the use of force in international relations and call for respect for other countries’ sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity. Any unilateral military action bypassing the [United Nations] Security Council runs contrary to the purpose and principles of the UN Charter and violates the principles of international law and the basic norms governing international relations, and will further complicate the Syrian issue.

China urges the relevant parties to return to the framework of international law and resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation.
