Green energy FAIL: Unrecyclable wind turbine blades are piling up in landfills — and it's going to get worse

Did you know wind turbine blades aren't recyclable?

According to a recent article in Bloomberg, wind turbine blades, which can be "longer than a Boeing 747 wing," can't be recycled or repurposed, leaving no alternative for disposal but to bury them in landfills. The fiberglass behemoths must be cut into smaller pieces, using a "diamond-encrusted industrial saw," and hauled away with tractor-trailers to be buried in the earth.

"The wind turbine blade will be there, ultimately, forever," Bob Cappadona, chief operating officer for the North American unit of Veolia Environnement SA, told Bloomberg.

And the problem is "going to get worse," the article explained, because the new, larger wind turbines being built now outnumber the tens of thousands of aging turbines by more than 5 to 1.
