iPhone types 'Trump' when users say 'racist' into dictation software, Apple blames 'phonetic overlap'

The speech-to-text error was replicated by multiple news outlets after a viral video brought the topic to light.

Apple iPhone users have reported a bug that replaced the word "racist" with "Trump" when speaking into their phones.

Using Apple's voice-to-text function, iPhone owners noticed a bug in the software such that if they said the word "racist" to their phones, they would type "Trump" before quickly replacing the word with "racist."

The glitch did not occur every single time, and it took the person in the viral video just two tries for it to happen.

The error was noted in a TikTok video that went viral, but it was also confirmed by multiple independent journalists, as well as the New York Times. The outlet said it was able to create the glitch multiple times using Apple's automatic dictation feature.

'[A] phonetic overlap.'

Officially, the reason for the bug is unclear, and Apple officials brazenly blamed a "phonetic overlap" between the two words but said they intended to fix it.

The issue reportedly began appearing after a recent update to Apples servers, former Siri team member John Burkey told the Times. Burkey said the change was likely coded somewhere in Apple's systems.

"This smells like a serious prank," Burkey said. "The only question is: Did someone slip this into the data or slip into the code?"

It is possible that the issue came from poorly executed AI, which would pull information from another source and therefore provide false information about a person or topic. However, Burkey said this was unlikely, especially given that the word corrects itself, which he said indicates it is not a technical problem.

AI referencing was the source of a previous auto-dictation issue regarding iPhones and Trump in 2018, though. During the president's first term, Siri displayed the image of a penis in response to the user prompt "Who is Donald Trump?"

This was due to the Apple interface pulling information from Wikipedia, which had a penis as the file photo for a page pertaining to Trump.

Apple recently announced a $500 billion commitment to the United States over four years for investments in manufacturing and supply chains; this included a factory in Houston, Texas.
