Teen athlete has both legs amputated after being hit by a car; driver who allegedly caused the accident was under house arrest for other crimes

A teenage volleyball player had both legs amputated after she was hit by a car in downtown St. Louis Saturday, KMOV reported.

Janae Edmondson, a Murfreesboro, Tennessee, girl, was critically injured when she was struck by a Chevy Malibu that pinned her between itself and a parked car. The Malibu had gone airborne when it was struck by an Audi Q5 whose driver had run a yield sign.

Police arrested 21-year-old Daniel Riley, the driver of the Audi, in connection with the case. Riley was driving without a license and while under house arrest for a separate crime.

Riley was charged with three counts of assault, armed criminal action, and operating a vehicle without a valid license, the outlet reported.

Riley was out on bond for robbery and armed criminal action for a robbery that happened in August 2020. His personal recognizance bond, received last August, was conditioned upon GPS monitoring and house arrest. His most recent GPS-related violation was filed just five days before the crash that cost Janae both her legs, according to KMOV.

Police estimate Riley was driving 45 miles per hour (20 mph over the limit) when he ran a yield sign and hit the Malibu. Riley and a passenger in the Malibu reportedly sustained minor injuries.

The Edmondson family members were in town for a volleyball event, walking back to their hotel, when the horrific incident occurred.

"I think everybody wants to hug their parents and hug their kids and be a little bit tighter with them, because you never know when something like this can happen," said Scott McQueen, the owner of Capitol Sports Center, which hosted the tournament the Edmondsons were attending.

"We are thankful to report that [Janae's] condition, though serious, is now stable. We at Mid TN Volleyball Club are asking our community, to pray for Janae, her family, and her teammates," a statement from Janae's volleyball club says.

"The whole club loves Janae and values her athletic gifts, toughness, determination, and perseverance. These are things she will need in great measure during the long recovery that lies ahead," the statement also says.

Janae's volleyball club established a GoFundMe campaign to help offset the Edmondson family's medical and other costs. As of Tuesday afternoon, the campaign had raised $161,140.
