'What a disgrace': US women's soccer team hammered for response to national anthem at World Cup

Members of the U.S. women's soccer team were hammered for their response to the American national anthem.

The U.S. played against Vietnam in the 2023 Women's World Cup on Friday at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

Six of the 11 American players did not place their hands over their hearts during the national anthem, and chose not to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner."

According to Outkick, only three USWNT players sang the national anthem: Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher, and Lindsey Horan.

Conversely, all of the women on the Vietnam team put their hands over their hearts and proudly sang their country’s anthem, “Song of a Marching Army.”

Many Americans were upset with how the U.S. Women's National Team "disrespected" the national anthem on a world stage, and voiced their disappointment on Twitter.

Author Brigitte Gabriel declared, "The US Women’s Soccer Team hates America, you can see it in their facial expressions and body language. They detest the National Anthem and everything it stands for. I couldn’t care less if they lose every game."

Cultural commentator Oli London said, "Majority of U.S. Women’s Soccer Team players REFUSE to sing the American national anthem. Meanwhile, their competitor team from Vietnam sang their own national anthem with pride, passion and emotion."

Writer Rod Dreher exclaimed, "Like MANY Americans of ALL political views, I have a lot of concerns and complaints about America today, but I would never dream of dishonoring my country with this behavior, on that stage. I hope these narcissistic heifers lose."

Forensic psychiatric physician Rupali Chadha said, "The US soccer team looked like they hated our national anthem… no wonder no one watches them!"

YouTuber Amuse declared, "Americans are being trained to hate their country. These angry women are representing a country they despise at the World Cup. Our schools are failing."

A Twitter user asked, "The US Women’s National Team refuses to sing the National Anthem. Aren’t they there to represent their country?"

One person said, "Most of the U.S. Women’s soccer players refused to sing our great national anthem. What. A. Disgrace."

Another added, "If the US Women's Soccer Team doesn't care about our National Anthem, I'm not going to support them. Anyone else feel the same way?"

The U.S. Women's National Team would win the match by a score of 3-0. It was the first time Vietnam had competed in the World Cup.
