Here are the top 5 states people are leaving — is yours on the list?

Where does your state rank on these lists?

If you bought a new home in Oregon, Idaho, or Vermont this year, more likely than not you came from out of the state. But if your last home was in New Jersey or Illinois, more likely than not your new home isn't.

This new study, conducted by moving company United Van Lines, is based on the percentage people moving in a particular state who used the company to help them move — either into the state, out of the state, or just moving around within the state. The study includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia, but not Alaska or Hawaii.

Check out the slideshows below to find out if your state was one of the five that showed the greatest amount of movement in or out of the state.

While more rural and Western states saw people moving in, these five states had people moving out in large numbers.

62.4 percent of all people who moved to a new home in this state in the past year moving from out of state. Whether its the scenic views or the famous potatoes, people seem to like Idaho. Idaho had the second highest population growth by percentage in the country between July 1, 2017 and July 1, 2018. According to United Van Lines, most of the people who used their services to move to this state did so because they wanted "a lifestyle change."
