Here are the top 5 states people are fleeing — and where they are moving to

Where does your state rank on these lists?

If you bought a new home in Oregon, Idaho, or Vermont this year, more likely than not you came from out of the state. But if your last home was in New Jersey or Illinois, more likely than not your new home isn't.

This new study, conducted by moving company United Van Lines, is based on the percentage people moving in a particular state who used the company to help them move — either into the state, out of the state, or just moving around within the state. The study includes the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia, but not Alaska or Hawaii.

Check out the slideshows below to find out if your state was one of the five that showed the greatest amount of movement in or out of the state.

While more rural and Western states saw people moving in, these five states had people moving out in large numbers.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of ARizona grew by 122,770 between 2017 and 2018. 60.2 percent of all moves in Arizona during the past year were people moving in from out of state.
