'Siding with the terrorist organization': Rep. Rashida Tlaib's own constituents call her out for anti-Israel actions

Jewish constituents who live in Rep. Rashida Tlaib's congressional district say the Michigan Democrat does not speak for them.

For the last month, Tlaib has subjected herself to intense criticism for refusing to unequivocally condemn Hamas' barbaric attack on Israel. At the same time, she has repeatedly heaped criticism on Israel, disseminated Hamas propaganda, and even spoken positively about a Hamas rallying cry that demands the extermination of Israel.

Her actions led to a bipartisan censure last week.

It is no surprise, then, that many of her constituents — residents in Michigan's 13th Congressional District — are not happy with their representative.

"I was hopeful that she was going to represent the whole district," resident Pamela Lippitt told the New York Times. "But she just — she doesn't represent me."

Rabbi Aaron Starr, who leads a prominent Jewish congregation in Tlaib's district, said the congresswomen "has chosen not to reach out, and she has responded to my efforts to communicate with her with misleading form letters." And in his view, Starr told the Times that Tlaib is "siding with the terrorist organization Hamas."

State Sen. Jeremy Moss (D), moreover, told the Times that many of Tlaib's constituents vented to him at a recent event and revealed what they told him.

"I had so many people coming up to me saying that they don’t feel seen, heard, represented," Moss recounted.

On the other hand, the New York Times spoke with Muslim constituents in Tlaib's district — many of whom live in Dearborn, home to the largest per capita Muslim population in the U.S. — who love Tlaib's actions. In fact, according to the Times, Tlaib "has been hailed as a hero" by her Dearborn constituents, who believe she has been victimized for defending Palestinians.

Still, Tlaib is creating for herself a situation that may backfire politically.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Tlaib's "Squad" colleague, has earned herself a competitive primary challenger — and so could Tlaib, according to Mark Mellman, whose organization, Democratic Majority for Israel, advocates for pro-Israel policies in the Democratic Party.

"I think Congresswoman Tlaib is radically out of step with her colleagues in Congress, radically out of step with the Democratic Party, and radically out of step with Democrats in Michigan," Mellman told the Times. "We hope she will change her views, and if not, perhaps somebody might be interested in running against her."
