Deadly shooting at Tesla charging station after armed man is maced by alleged shooter

A man was shot and killed at a Tesla charging station in Denver after an armed man was reportedly maced by the alleged shooter, who later opened fire.

Around 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, a man was shot at the Edgewater Public Market near a Shake Shack restaurant, according to ABC Denver 7.

The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital after allegedly getting into an altercation with a driver in the parking lot. Edgewater Police Sergeant Bob Brink told the local outlet that the victim, who was armed, approached the shooter's vehicle first.

The report states that the shooter called 911 after macing the 33-year-old victim, then opened fire.

The dispute was originally thought to be over a charging station spot, but police dismissed that theory after speaking to witnesses. One of the parties involved owned his car, and the other was renting, according to the police.

The charging location was reported to be an area where Tesla owners hang out. Witnesses there were questioned by investigators.

The 38-year-old shooter has since been detained, according to Fox affiliate WFIN, which spoke to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Jenny Fulton, a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, told the outlet that the shooting is being investigated as a homicide.

The spokesperson said that there were two shots fired during the incident, but just one struck the victim. Police did not say whether or not both individuals fired a shot each.

Authorities also did not confirm whether the shooter was a Tesla driver and do not know the reason for the shooting.

According to a reporter on the scene, Bayan Wang, police were determining whether or not any of the nearby Teslas were recording dashcam footage at the time. The ABC 7 Denver report showed at least six Teslas behind police caution tape, with a red sweater on the ground purported to belong to the victim, where his firearm was discovered.
