Teens wanted for anti-Semitic Passover attacks in New York City

Three teens are wanted by police for anti-Semitic attacks in New York City on the third day of Passover.

Two teen boys and a girl are accused of spewing anti-Semitic remarks and attacking a man around 2:45 p.m. on Friday in Queens. The teens shouted hateful insults at a 49-year-old man at Caffrey Avenue and Mott Avenue in the neighborhood of Far Rockaway. The news website QNS reported that the teens also threw rocks at the man near Yeshiva Ateret Shimon — an Orthodox synagogue.

The girl then brandished a razor and approached the victim. However, a good Samaritan intervened and the suspects fled, according to the New York Police Department.

Roughly seven hours later, the group reportedly yelled anti-Semitic verbal abuse at a 48-year-old man at Brookhaven Avenue and Beach 17 Street. One of the males shoved the victim to the ground before fleeing the crime scene.

The victims did not suffer serious injuries.

There were no arrests, and the suspects are still at large.

The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force and police from the 101st Precinct are investigating the incident that is being labeled as a hate crime.

Police requested the public's assistance in tracking down the suspects. NYPD Crime Stoppers released footage of the suspects. Anyone with information about the anti-Semitic attacks are encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), visiting crimestoppers.nypdonline.org, downloading the NYPD Crime Stoppers mobile app, or texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.

Authorities are offering up to $3,500 in reward money for information that leads to the arrest of the teens.

Last year, anti-Semitic hate crimes soared in New York City. There were 293 anti-Semitic incidents in NYC in 2022, up from 207 in 2021.

According to data from the Anti-Defamation League, anti-Semitic incidents in the United States spiked 36% in 2022 compared to the year prior. The report said there were 3,697 incidents of harassment, vandalism, and assault targeting Jewish people and communities in 2022. This is the third time in the last five years that the total has been the highest number ever recorded by the ADL since first collecting data in 1979.
