Teenage girls arrested after stolen car crashes into school bus during joy ride

A 14- and 15-year-old girl were arrested by Milwaukee police in connection with a stolen car that crashed into the back of a school bus, captured on video by a truck driver.

The driver of a stolen Kia was still on the loose after cell phone video showed a car swerving down a Milwaukee street with two individuals hanging outside the windows before the car crashed into the back of a Milwaukee Public Schools bus, according to WISN 12.

One of the passengers hanging out of the car's window, a 15-year-old boy, hit the bus and lost consciousness. The teen's family stated that he was on a breathing machine in hospital, calling it "a miracle" that he's still alive.

Charges for the teen girls have remained unannounced.

The trucker driver who recorded the crash said that he spotted the Kia driving recklessly and had already seen the car speeding in the school zone before he started filming.

"When I saw them coming this way, I dialed 911 right away because it's reckless driving — they're hanging out of the windows. In the process of actually getting in touch with a dispatcher, they turned around and everything happened so quickly," a witness told the local outlet.

An 11-year-old passenger on the school bus was also thrown from the vehicle during the crash and taken to hospital but did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Speaking to WISN 12, the child recapped the events saying, "As the bus was going up, I fell out of the bus and the tire ran over my foot."

"I really didn't feel nothing until I tried to stand up. So I could see what's wrong with me," the little boy, who is now on crutches recalled. "As soon as the bus stopped, I felt every single inch of pain," he added.

Milwaukee Public Schools released a lengthy statement about a "reckless driving situation," remarking on safety measures they have implemented to protect schools against similar incidents:

“This morning, a reckless driving situation resulted in an incident outside of Morse Middle School during arrival. The incident resulted in injuries to an individual riding in the vehicle that was driving recklessly," said Stephen Davis, media relations manager for the school district.

"This school year, [the district] has placed hundreds of concrete bollards at our buildings and added other measures like fence posts, barricades, and cameras to our properties. We have also been actively working with representatives from the city and public safety partners to see how we can work together to identify areas that can be mitigated," Davis concluded.
