Hollywood director defends child drag shows during rambling Oscars victory speech

A Hollywood director defended children dressing up at drag shows during his rambling victory speech at the Oscars awards show Sunday.

"Everything Everywhere All at Once" co-director Daniel Scheinert accepted the award for Best Director and then launched into an admonition against recent bills passed against drag shows that include children in the audience.

“We want to dedicate this to the mommies, all the mommies of the world. To our moms. Specifically to my mom and dad," said Scheinert with his co-director Daniel Kwan beside him.

"Ken and Becky, thank you for not squashing my creativity when I was making really disturbing horror films or really perverted comedy films, or dressing in drag as a kid, which is a threat to nobody,” he added.

The salute to children in drag received a rousing applause from the elite celebrity crowd.

Many on the right have called for local governments to ban children from attending drag shows on the basis that they will be inappropriately exposed to sexual themes. Defenders of "family friendly" drag shows claim that children learn to accept themselves and their sexual identities by attending drag shows.

The critically acclaimed film Scheinert directed garnered various other award victories at the Oscars, including Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, who used her speech to tout racial representation in Hollywood.

"For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities. This is proof that dreams do come true," the 60-year-old actress said.

She also went on to take a veiled jab at CNN's Don Lemon for his comments mocking Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley as being "past her prime."
