18 House Republicans reject Chip Roy amendment to bar Pentagon appropriations from being used to observe Pride Month

More than a dozen House Republicans voted against a Defense Department appropriations bill amendment that would have prohibited funds from being spent to observe so-called Pride Month.

"None of the funds made available by this Act for the Department of Defense or the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute may be used to carry out the observance of Pride Month as specified in the Cultural Observances and Awareness Events List of the Department of Defense and authorized by the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness," the amendment from Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas read.

The Cultural Observances and Awareness Events List includes Pride Month, which falls in June. Pride Month involves celebrating the LGBT agenda.

The 18 House GOP lawmakers who voted against Roy's amendment include:

• Thomas Kean, Jr. of New Jersey
• Kevin Kiley of California
• Nick LaLota of New York
• Michael Lawler of New York
• Nancy Mace of South Carolina
• Marcus Molinaro of New York
• Jay Obernolte of California
• Michelle Steel of California

During floor remarks, Roy noted that he has "very few constituents who disagree with this sentiment: That we should be focused on having a military that is designed to, when called upon, to blow stuff up and kill people in defense of this country as needed."

While the aforementioned 18 Republicans voted against the amendment, there were no Democrats who voted in favor of it. The tally included 202 House Republicans who voted in favor of the amendment and 231 lawmakers who voted against it, including 213 Democrats and 18 Republicans.
