NYC considering housing illegal immigrants in closed jail where Jeffrey Epstein died

A letter from New York City officials to Governor Kathy Hochul suggested housing the city's overflow of migrants in the same jail where Jeffrey Epstein died, among other locations.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center, which was closed in 2021, was suggested for reopening in a letter to the governor from a senior counsel in NYC's legal department, Yahoo News reported.

In response, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said in statement, "While we decline to comment concerning governmental correspondence, we can provide; MCC New York is closed, at least temporarily, and long-term plans for MCC New York have not been finalized.”

The letter to the governor also suggested using other state-owned locations, such as the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The venue has approximately 3.3 million square feet of space, which includes a special events hall that typically seats 3,800.

Also on the list are the dormitories of State University of New York and Fort Dix, an Army base in New Jersey.

The letter, dated August 9, 2023, came just days after New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared that the city has "no more room."

"From this moment on, it's downhill. There is no more room," Adams said. The mayor's office noted at the time that more than 95,000 migrants had arrived in the city since spring 2022.

This was followed by the governor criticizing the mayor's handling of the crisis.

"Let's be very clear — you cannot involuntarily take people from the city and send them all over the state of New York," Hochul told Spectrum News NY1. "Putting someone in a hotel on a dark, lonely road in upstate New York and telling them they're supposed to survive is not compassion."

With hotels at capacity, hundreds of migrants been have pictured sleeping on city sidewalks, often on cardboard, as they await housing possibilities.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons deemed the Metropolitan Correctional Center unfit for human habitation in 2021, due to years of deterioration. It housed infamous prisoners such as John Gotti, associates of Osama bin Laden, and even Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

The conditions of the facility gained new scrutiny after Epstein's death, with lawyers also complaining that it was infested with bugs and rats and had water and sewage leaks.
