Poll: Most Democrats do not want Biden to run in 2024 as 'bleak national outlook' drives approval ratings through the floor

An overwhelming number of Democrats oppose President Joe Biden running for re-election in 2024, according to a new New York Times/Siena College poll.

The survey, released on Monday, showed that 64% of Democratic voters want their party to nominate someone other than Biden to be their presidential nominee in the 2024 presidential election, a startling figure considering that Biden has been president for less than two years.

The top reasons Democrats want a new candidate include Biden's age (33%), Biden's job performance (32%), and simply wanting a fresh face (15%).

Even worse for Biden, the poll found that 77% of registered voters believe America is heading in the wrong direction. That "bleak national outlook," according to the New York Times, is driving Biden's approval into the ground. In fact, the poll found that just 33% of registered voters approve of Biden's job performance, while a whopping 60% disapprove.

Only a majority of Democrats and black voters approve of Biden's job performance, and even those figures are lower than normal for a first-year incumbent.

Importantly, the poll found that issues the Democratic Party emphasizes — climate change, abortion, health care, racism, and former President Donald Trump, among others — are not the issues Americans care about most.

Instead, the poll affirmed that voters most care about the economy and inflation.

"I went from living a comfortable lifestyle to I can’t afford anything anymore," Nicole Farrier, a Democratic voter who supported Biden in 2020, told the New York Times. "I’m just going to come out and say it: I want younger blood."

Another Democratic voter, Kelly King, told the newspaper she feels Biden is abdicating his responsibilities to effect change.

"I feel like he hasn’t really spoken much about it," King said of ongoing economic crises. "He hasn’t done what I think he’s capable of doing as president to help the American people. As a Democrat, I figured he would really be on our side and put us back on the right track. And I just feel like he’s not."
