New Jersey man found naked on top of his decapitated mother, sings 'Jesus Loves Me' during arrest, police say

A 46-year-old man was arrested for the alleged murder and decapitation of his 74-year-old mother at her apartment in Ocean City, New Jersey.

Police said that Jeffrey Surgent called 911 at about 4 p.m. on Friday and told the dispatcher that he had killed his mother and added that he suffered from bipolar disorder.

When police arrived, they found Surgent naked and lying on top of the body of his mother, who had been decapitated and left in the hallway of their apartment building on 6th Street. They said her head was found on the floor several feet away.

Court papers said that Surgent apologized repeatedly after police arrived and that he sang the religious song "Jesus Loves Me" as he was led away.

Investigators said that security footage showed the man toss his mother's head out in the hallway and then drag her body out as well.

Surgent was charged with first-degree murder and with two weapons offenses. He is being held at Cape May County.

A neighbor in the apartment building said she had spent time with Surgent before the horrific incident.

"We went to a BBQ," said Janice Powers to WPVI-TV. "He just played with the kids and he was really nice. I don't know what to say. It was weird."

The family of the victim and her son were understandably shaken by the incident. They have asked for help through a GoFundMe account that has raised more than $6,600.

"She lived with us and helped us with our day-to-day lives. Without her, we can't afford rent or food and we cannot pay for her burial or cremation," said the family in the donation page.

Ocean City is a beach town about 11 miles south of Atlantic City with a population of 11,000 people.
