Nissan recalls 236,000 cars due to possible dangerous defect that can cause loss of steering control

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has acknowledged a recall of a large batch of Nissan Sentras that could have a dangerous defect that can cause drivers to lose control of their steering.

The NHTSA acknowledged in a letter that 226,000 Nissan Sentras from model years 2020-2022 were to be recalled. The letter cited that the "left and/or right tie rod may bend" and that a "bent tie rod can break and cause a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash."

The tie rod "transmits force from the steering center link or rack gear to the steering knuckle. This will cause the wheel to turn," according to All About Automotive. "The outer tie rod end connects with an adjusting sleeve, which allows the length of the tie rod to be adjustable. This adjustment is used to set a vehicle’s alignment angle."

Once the newly designed parts are available, the transportation department said, dealers are to replace both the left and right tie rods free of charge. Letters informing customers are to be sent out in early October 2023.

This isn't even the first time Nissan Sentras have been recalled to fix the exact same issue.

A June 16, 2021, recall prompted a notice to be mailed out the following August for the tie rod issue as well.

2022 Nissan Sentras also saw their own specific recall in June 2023. In that instance, an improper seal risked potential electrical failure that could render air bags inoperable.

"The driver's side cowl area may have a missing or improper seal, which can allow water to leak inside the vehicle and corrode electrical components," the recall stated.

"Corrosion of the electrical components could result in failure of various electrical systems, such as loss of wiper motor function or exterior lighting, inoperative air bags, or the ability to shift into gear without applying the brake pedal. Any of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash."

Some of the most dangerous car recalls in history have included a sticky accelerator pedal in 2010 Toyotas, which caused upwards of 89 deaths, according to RATESDOTCA.

In 2000, Bridgestone-Firestone Inc. recalled 6.5 million tires in North America after they were connected to the deaths of 271 people in the United States. The treads would rip apart at high speeds, which led to tire blowouts on highways.
