'A true match': Wisconsin mother dies in car crash hours after funeral for husband, who died of cancer

A Wisconsin mother died in a car crash hours after her husband's funeral. The husband's death from aggressive cancer happened just days earlier than the deadly car accident.

Louis Nowak, 54, lost his battle with cancer on March 19. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer only six months before his death. The funeral for Nowak was held on April 1.

Just hours after the funeral, Sara Nowak "died suddenly" in a car accident. Around 8:30 p.m., the 42-year-old mother died in a single-vehicle crash.

According to a preliminary investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the driver lost control of the car, and the vehicle flipped in a ditch near STH 106 and Calkins Road in Palmyra, Wisconsin. Nowak, who was the passenger in the car, and the driver were pronounced dead at the tragic scene.

Randal Cartwright, the father of Sara, told WDJT-TV, "It's really hard because you get done and then five and a half hours later, you get a call saying that your daughter was in an accident."

Sara's mother, Patricia Cartwright, said, "We want everyone to remember her as being full of life."

Sara and Louis had six children between them.

Cartwright said, "Her house was never full, because there was always room for one more."

The couple had been married for nearly six years.

Sara's mother said the couple were "a true match."

"Where one was, the other one was. What the other one didn't think of, the other one did," Cartwright said.

The obituary for Louis read, "Louis enjoyed spending time with family and friends, tinkering on engines & motors, going to swap meets, camping, classic cars, and classic rock music."

Despite her husband's tough battle with cancer, Sara was there for her friends and family.

Cartwright said, "Whenever there was something that somebody needed, she said, 'Don't worry, we got this.'"

Sara's obituary said, "Sara didn’t have friends, everyone was family. She never had a full house because she always had room for more. She didn’t just enjoy spending time with friends and family, she lived for it. For Sara, the word NO did not exist. Always willing to try, tackle or do something new with anyone willing to do it with her, 'We got this' was her answer."

Patricia said, "I don't think she could be without him. So, she is with him."

A friend of Sara's launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the family.

The crowdfunding campaign read, "Sara went to visit Louis in heaven!"
