CNN anchor can't handle the truth when GOP lawmaker takes her to school on border crisis: 'Spare us the gaslighting'

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) dished out a history lesson about Democrats and the border crisis on Wednesday that CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins clearly didn't like.

At the beginning of the interview, Collins attempted to make a mountain of a molehill, suggesting that Democrat Tom Suozzi's victory over Republican Mazi Pilip in a New York special election is an indictment against Republican issues, especially immigration and the border crisis.

"Spare us the gaslighting," Lawler told Collins. "The reality is that [the border crisis] is a crisis of the Democrats' own making."

House Republicans, Lawler reminded Collins, have passed legislation addressing the border crisis, a bill that every House Democrat voted against. But Collins defended that opposition because the bill contains "a lot of Trump-era immigration policies."

"Those are the policies that actually brought down the border crossings," Lawler fact-checked. "Joe Biden reversed those policies and border crossings exploded, which is why we're dealing with this catastrophe."

Despite her initial assertion about the significance of immigration policy and the New York special election, Collins then tried to change subjects and asked Lawler about gossip involving George Santos.

But Lawler quickly turned the tables on Collins.

"I want to go back to the border because that actually is important, unlike George Santos," he said. "The fact is that Democrats in the U.S. Senate ... had nothing to say or do on the border until late last year. ... It's absurd."

Collins responded by again blaming House Republicans, arguing that they refused to pass a bipartisan Senate bill to help Donald Trump.

"Well, again, Democrats had three years under Joe Biden to actually do something about the border. They chose not to," Lawler pointed out. "Senate Democrats chose not to act until December of last year to actually start negotiating a bill.

"Here's the bottom line, and the way Congress works, because the media seems to have this position that whatever the Senate passes, everybody has to accept. There are two houses within Congress. And you actually have to negotiate —" he continued when Collins interrupted him.

"Congressman, unfortunately, I got to stop you there," she said, talking over Lawler and cutting him off.

Collins said she needed to end the segment because the interview was running up on the next CNN show. But there were four mintues before the top of the hour, and a review of CNN transcripts shows that Collins typically ends her show at 10 p.m. — not 9:56 p.m.
