Migrant who allegedly attacked NYPD cops released from jail after ‘sanctuary’ church posts $15K cash bail

An illegal migrant who allegedly attacked two New York Police Department officers was recently released from jail after a “sanctuary” church in Brooklyn posted his $15,000 cash bail, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

Yohenry Brito, a 24-year-old Venezuelan migrant, was the only individual held behind bars after he and a gang of other illegal migrants allegedly assaulted two police officers on January 27. Brito was being detained at Rikers Island until Tuesday, when Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bay Ridge paid his bail, according to Reverend Juan Ruiz.

Ruiz told the Post, “Our church is basically a sanctuary.”

“We assume that people are innocent until they are proven otherwise,” Ruiz added, citing “the politically charged context” surrounding the case. He claimed that “there is a lot more than what is being publicized.”

“Sanctuary gives you that kind of breathing space,” Ruiz noted.

According to the reverend, Brito is not staying at the church.

On Friday, progressive Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg charged Brito with two counts of assault in the second degree, which is a class D felony. Two other individuals believed to be involved in the incident, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, and Yorman Reveron, 24, were also brought up on the same charges.

Kelvin Servita Arocha, 19, was charged with two counts of assault for allegedly kicking equipment belonging to the police department. Wilson Juarez, 21, was charged with a class E felony for allegedly tampering with physical evidence.

Bragg reported Friday that three additional suspects remained at large. Several of the illegal migrants believed to be involved in the gang attack were thought to be heading for California. Some of those individuals were apprehended by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Phoenix, Arizona, last week.

Yarwuin Madris, 18, was charged with assault and detained this week. He is being held without bail.

Gomez-Izquiel was arrested again this week and held without bail after being accused of shoplifting at a Macy’s department store in Queens.

In surveillance video captured of the incident, a scuffle breaks out between two officers and a large group of migrants after cops instructed the individuals to move along. The gang of migrants took turns punching and kicking the officers. The group fled the scene, leaving the cops on the ground.

The number of officers injured by suspects is at an all-time high, the Post reported. Experts told the media outlet that the increase in aggression toward officers is directly linked to anti-cop rhetoric and soft-on-crime policies.
