Masked home invaders tase dog, hold teen at gunpoint — but Dad arms himself, opens fire, wounds 1 crook, kills the other

A pair of masked men broke into a Tennessee home last week, tased the family dog, and held the homeowner's teenage son at gunpoint, WSMV-TV reported.

But the homeowner armed himself, opened fire, wounded one of the intruders, and killed the other, the station said.

Murfreesboro police told WSMV they responded around 8:30 p.m. Friday to a home in the 100 block of January Street. A preliminary investigation indicated two masked intruders broke into the home through the front door, tased the family's dog, and held the homeowner's teenage son at gunpoint, the station added.

"I heard my dog make like a noise like something was hurting, and I heard taser," the homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, told WTVF-TV.

He added to WTVF, "Then I heard my son holler out 'Don't shoot!' so I knew something wasn't right then, so I retrieved my gun, and came out of my room, and that's when I seen the intruder had the gun pointed at my son."

With that, the homeowner shot the two intruders, WSMV said.

Police found one masked man with multiple gunshot wounds near the home's front door, WTVF said, adding that 52-year-old Kevin Ford was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another intruder — 42-year-old Clifford Wright — was found at the Salvation Army on Main Street suffering from several gunshot wounds, police told WSMV, adding that Wright was treated at a hospital and taken to jail.

Police told WSMV that Wright was charged with aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated burglary, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent felony.

"It was either them or me — that's how I was looking at it, and I was making sure it wasn't me or my family," the homeowner added to WTVF, which said his mother lives in the home with him and his son.

Wright remained in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a $700,000 bond as of Monday, WSMV said, adding that he's scheduled to appear June 5 in Rutherford County General Sessions Court.

The homeowner is not facing any charges, police told WSMV.

"I wish it wouldn’t have happened, but I’m glad it went my way instead of their way," the homeowner added to WTVF.
