Man allegedly bites off part of cop's finger after crashing into police vehicle, other cars. Suspect is an illegal immigrant, sources say.

A man who allegedly bit off part of a cop's finger in a holding cell after he crashed into a police vehicle and three other cars last week is an illegal immigrant, law enforcement sources said.

What are the details?

Officers in Jamaica, Queens, saw a blue Nissan Altima with expired out-of-state license plates on Liberty Avenue near Merrick Boulevard late Wednesday night, police told the New York Daily News.

Police said Lenni Rodriguez-Cruz, 28, of East Flatbush took off when officers tried to pull him over, the Daily News said, adding that the license plates also were registered to a different car.

Multiple people jumped out of the suspect's way as he sped through Rufus King Park in downtown Jamaica and then went against traffic on Hillside Avenue, police added to the paper.

Rodriguez-Cruz finally smashed into four cars, including a police vehicle, on Parsons Boulevard near the Grand Central Parkway service road, the Daily News noted, after which police arrested him.

Police added that while in the holding cell of the 103rd Precinct, the suspect "began to act disorderly and bit off a portion of a sergeant’s finger causing a serious physical injury," the paper reported.

The Daily News said a photo from a police source shows the officer holding up the injured tip of his left ring finger while he was at Jamaica Hospital.

The suspect is an illegal immigrant, Fox News reported, citing law enforcement sources.

Charges against Rodriguez-Cruz include assault with intent to cause disfigurement, assaulting a police officer, injuring an on-duty officer, reckless endangerment, fleeing a traffic stop, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, operating an unregistered vehicle, driving while apparently impaired, and refusing to take a breath test, Fox News added.

He pleaded not guilty at arraignment Friday in Queens Criminal Court, the Daily News said, adding that his bail was set at $250,0000 cash or $350,000 bond.
