Lucky in love: Newlyweds win $1M Michigan lotto prize the day after their wedding

Michigan newlyweds now have a sizeable nest egg to help them build their lives together after they won a $1 million prize on a recent lotto ticket the day after their wedding.

The day after tying the knot, the couple stopped by a convenience store in Prudenville, Michigan, a small town of 1,600 residents about two hours due north of Lansing. While in the store, the 57-year-old groom decided to press his luck and purchase a $10 lotto scratch-off ticket called Diamonds & Pearls.

The man then handed the ticket to his new wife to scratch, and the blushing bride proceeded to play. She was soon dumbfounded to discover she had scratched off a circle which indicated that they had won the $1 million jackpot.

"When she revealed the ‘$1 MIL’ prize amount, we were in disbelief. We kept reading the instructions over and over again to make sure we really won," the man said, according to the Michigan Lottery.

"It was an exciting couple of days for us!" he added.

As the couple has opted to remain anonymous, little is known about them or the circumstances surrounding their streak of good fortune. The Michigan Lottery claimed that the man lives in Livingston County, located downstate from Prudenville, about halfway between Detroit and Lansing. His new wife, if she didn't live in Livingston County before, now presumably lives there too.

Though their wedding date is unknown, the Diamonds & Pearls is a relatively new game, having just been released in August. So the couple married sometime in the last three months.

They have also chosen to receive a lump sum payment of about $693,000 rather than annuity payments for the full $1 million. Emily Irwin of Wells Fargo Bank, who specializes in advising lotto winners about their options, told Business Insider that the large sum payment is a good choice for those looking to invest, as the newlyweds claim to want to do.

Those looking for the "peace of mind" of guaranteed income should go with the annuity payments, she said.
