Lizzo fills concert stage with drag queens to protest Tennessee law: 'Why would I not create a safe space?'

Celebrity Lizzo filled a stage with drag queens at her concert in order to protest against a Tennessee law that bans drag shows in the state.

The popular singer was performing at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tennessee, on Friday when she stopped the show to tell the audience she rejected calls to cancel her show.

“In light of recent and tragic events and current events, I was told by people on the internet, ‘Cancel your shows in Tennessee,’ ‘Don’t go to Tennessee,’” Lizzo said.

“Their reason was valid, but why would I not come to the people who need to hear this message the most?" she asked. “Why would I not create a safe space in Tennessee where we can celebrate drag entertainers and celebrate our differences?”

At that moment, numerous drag queens ran out onto the stage and surrounded Lizzo.

She posted a video of her announcement on her social media account.

Republican Gov. Bill Lee signed the legislation into law in February, but a judge later temporarily blocked the law and ruled that the bill was too vaguely written.

Lizzo has made headlines for taking a stand in favor of "body positivity" and criticizing people for "fatphobia."

In 2020, Lizzo's fans lambasted reality show physical trainer Jillian Michaels for refusing to accept Lizzo's body positivity.

"We should always be inclusive, but, you cannot glorify obesity," Michaels said at the time.

"It's dangerous. It kills people," she continued. "Why are we celebrating her body? Why does it matter? Why aren't we celebrating her music? 'Cause it isn't going to be awesome if she gets diabetes."

Lizzo herself was later criticized by fans after she said she was trying to lose weight.

"YES I am angry, YES I am triggered, yes I am mourning a big b**ch *MIGHT* wanna get skinny, bc that's 1 more battle Fatphobia has won," tweeted one disappointed fan.
