Realtor mocked for comparing LGBTQ people fleeing red states to slaves escaping slavery: 'We're calling it ... the rainbow Underground Railroad'

An article detailing the "rainbow Underground Railroad" was mocked and ridiculed on social media for comparing the plight of LGBTQ residents in Republican states to that of slaves seeking freedom in the 1800s.

Real estate broker Bob McCranie was interviewed by over a website service he set up to help members of the LGBTQ community sell their homes and find a new home in a state with fewer LGBTQ restrictions.

“As LGBTQIA+ citizens in Red States, many of us feel at risk. Current laws are highly discriminatory against trans youth and their families. Our marriages, our families, and even our safety are at risk," read the text on the website.

"If you feel the need to leave the jurisdiction of a Red State, let us help you sell your property here and connect with you an LGBTQIA+ or ally agent in a better location of your choice," the website added. "We are licensed in Texas and we have affiliates in all 50 states and several countries.”

McCranie went on to compare profiting from selling homes in red states to slavery.

“We’re calling it kind of the ‘rainbow Underground Railroad,'” he said. “We’re trying to get people out quietly and get them to someplace where they feel safer.”

The article on KFOR-TV was nailed with the dreaded "ratio," when negative comments completely outnumber the "likes" of support the tweet receives. That tweet received only 437 likes and 991 retweets while garnering over 2.2k comments.

The bizarre comparison to slavery was lambasted by many online.

"Definitely reminds me of when slaves hired realtors to help them get the best price for the homes they owned," replied commentator Amelia Hamilton.

"Well, one important difference is that the abolitionists - who risked their lives to help escaped slaves navigate the actual Underground Railroad - didn’t receive a 3% commission on the sale of the slaves’ (non-existent) homes," responded writer A.J. Kay.

"Yes, the oppression is just like the antebellum south. This isn’t an offensive comparison at all," joked writer Mark Hemingway.

"Omg these people and their fake victim status are now stealing black history AND elevating realtors into savior territory," joked another critic.

"Why are you denigrating & appropriating the actual Underground Railroad and the horrors Black Americans had to experience to find safety?" read another tweet.

McCranie says his service has helped "27 groups of people" to escape the oppression of red states.
