Lead actress learns hard lesson after accusing Israel of genocide, ethnic cleansing: 'We have zero tolerance'

Actress Melissa Barrera will not return as a lead actress in "Scream 7" after she was fired for anti-Semitic social media posts.

Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind a revival of the "Scream" film franchise, dropped Barrera from the cast of the newest installment over a series of anti-Semitic online posts. Barrera played the lead character, Sam Carpenter, in the franchise's fifth and sixth installments.

The company said in a statement on Tuesday:

Spyglass' stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.

Since Hamas' barbaric attack on Oct. 7, Barrera has posted several strong statements to social media, accusing Israel of "genocide and ethnic cleansing" and regurgitating an anti-Semitic trope alleging that Jews control the media.

In one post, Barrera said, "Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt [sic] nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING."

She said in another post, "I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last 2 weeks or so, following accounts etc. Why? Because western media only shows the other side. Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself."

News of Barrera's firing came on the same day that United Talent Agency, one of the premier talent agencies in Hollywood, dropped Susan Sarandon over her anti-Israel comments.

The issue of Israel is dividing Hollywood, according to Variety, and behind the scenes there has been a reckoning for those willing to promote anti-Semitism. That reckoning has simply spilled over into the public eye with these developments involving Barrera and Sarandon.
