Kindergartener's violent story for class assignment leads to arrest of her mother

A Tennessee woman was recently placed under arrest after her daughter submitted a violent story for a class assignment.

A counselor at Donelson Elementary School in Arlington, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of Memphis, became concerned after reading a story written by one of the school's kindergarten students.

"Mother and father got into a fight," the little girl wrote. "Mom told him to get out because he was smoking too much. Father hit mother in the eye. Mother said look what you’ve done. Mother got the gun from under the bed.

"I was in the living room, and my sisters and brother were in the room," the story continued. "Mother pulled the gun on father and shot three times. The bullets hit the wall. Mother told him to sleep in his car in the driveway and not to come back or she will shoot him again."

The counselor contacted the state's Department of Children’s Services, which in turn contacted the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office to report the story. Deputies then went the girl's home to investigate.

On Monday, deputies arrived at the residence and found Kaydra Johnson, 28, standing outside. She told the deputies that she had been locked out of the house for about an hour and a half. Firefighters managed to force the garage door open and enter the residence, where they found two of Johnson's four children, a 1-year-old and a 4-year-old, unattended but otherwise unharmed.

Once inside, investigators reported seeing several bullet holes in the walls of the living room, the hallway, and one of the bedrooms. Johnson allegedly admitted to investigators that she had fired several rounds at her husband while their children were in the home but indicated she had done so in self-defense. She claimed that her husband, whose name has not been reported, had entered the house without her permission and then punched her in the face with his fist and with a vacuum cleaner.

Police noted that Johnson did have visible marks and bruises near her right eye. The husband was reportedly uninjured in the shooting. Investigators seized two firearms from the home and placed two kids in the care of their grandmother and two with their aunt.

Police then arrested Johnson and charged her with four counts of reckless endangerment. She was soon afterward released on her own recognizance. She is expected to appear in court again on February 23.
