Julián Castro tries to lead LGBTQ migrants across the US-Mexico border, and it does not go very well

Asylum-seekers have been attacked and abused while awaiting a hearing

Presidential candidate Julián Castro tried to lead LGBTQ and disabled migrants across the border from Mexico into the United States, but the Border Patrol had other ideas.

Castro tried to help eight gay and lesbian asylum-seekers and a deaf woman with her three relatives across the bridge from Mexico to Texas. They had been waiting under President Donald Trump's "Remain in Mexico" policy.

A lesbian asylum-seeker from Cuba told the Los Angeles Times that the policy was illegal, and a trick by the president to keep them out of the U.S. She wanted to only be identified by her first name, which is Dany.

"The U.S. doesn't want any migrants," she said.

Castro is calling for the policy to be ended by the Trump administration, and for asylum-seekers to be allowed into the U.S. to await their hearings with relatives or friends.

LGBTQ asylum-seekers say they have been discriminated against and even attacked by Mexicans while waiting under the new rule from the Trump administration. There are reports that they have even been attacked by other potential asylum-seekers as they wait in Mexico.

"The same people who are living with us discriminate against us," Dany said.

Despite Castro's efforts, the migrants were returned to Mexico by evening on Monday by U.S. Customs officials.

Castro is polling at 1 percent in the RealClearPolitics average of polling for the Democratic presidential nomination.
