JK Rowling says she'll 'happily' go to prison if 'misgendering' becomes a crime in the UK: 'Bring on the court case'

World-renowned author J.K. Rowling mocked compelled speech and said she would be willing to do prison time if denying reality was the alternative.

The "Harry Potter" author has frequently entered the arena of compelled speech, women's rights, and the encroachment on women's spaces by men who believe they are women.

Most recently, she commented on the news that the U.K.'s opposition party, the Labour Party, would force compelled speech if elected into power. The party revealed that it would criminalize the act of not referring to people by preferred gender identities.

Such laws would make "misgendering" a hate crime and upgrade charges to "aggravated offences." The party would also reportedly strengthen the sentencing guidelines for what it describes as abuse and violence targeted toward transgender people.

This means that alleged transphobic actions would be equated with assault and harassment hate crimes, which carry a possible sentence of up to two years in prison.

Rowling posted a photo from the U.K.'s Ministry of Justice that read "Repeat After Us: Trans Women Are Women."

"No," Rowling wrote in response on X.

A user replied to the image by saying "Vote Labour, get a two year stretch!" before Rowling revealed how far she was willing to go for free speech.

"I'll happily do two years if the alternative is compelled speech and forced denial of the reality and importance of sex," the author replied. "Bring on the court case, I say. It'll be more fun than I've ever had on a red carpet."

In June 2023, Rowling defended Elon Musk's decision to classify "cisgender" as a slur on his platform.

"'Cis' is ideological language, signifying belief in the unfalsifiable concept of gender identity. You have a perfect right to believe in unprovable essences that may or may not match the sexed body, but the rest of us have a right to disagree, and to refuse to adopt your jargon," Rowling tweeted.

To which Musk simply responded "Exactly."
