Jake Tapper grills Rashida Tlaib on BDS, whether Israel has 'right to exist.' Here's what she said.

'Why not boycott Egypt?'

Jake Tapper, host of CNN's "State of the Union," grilled Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) on Sunday for supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions, a widely condemned anti-Israel movement rooted in anti-Semitism.

What did Tlaib say about BDS movement?

Tlaib tried to reduce the BDS movement to an "economic boycott" of "racist policies" that perpetuate, as she claims, "human rights abuses." She claimed she would support similar movements against other countries — but Tapper did not buy it.

"Why not boycott Egypt?" Tapper asked. "They have human rights— "

"Oh, I would boycott Egypt of course!" Tlaib claimed.

"But you keep saying you 'would,' you 'would,' you 'would' boycott Egypt — but you're not," Tapper shot back.

Tlaib then clarified that she only supports the BDS movement because it has a name — and would support similar movements against other countries only if the protests are organized.

What did Tlaib say about Israel?

Later in the interview, Tapper asked Tlaib whether she believes Israel has a right to exist. Tapper had to ask twice before getting a substantive answer from Tlaib.

"I truly believe the state of Israel is — it exists, correct," Tlaib said.

"But understand does it exist in the detriment of inequality for the Palestinian people? The detriment of not moving forward in a peaceful resolution," she continued. "We're never going to have peace, I truly believe, if separate but equal is the way they want to go. And I can tell you I learned that from my African American teachers in Detroit public schools who showed me what the pain of oppression looks like. We're not gonna have peace if we don't understand that we are dehumanizing Palestinians every single day when we choose Israel over their rights."

"But yes or no? Does Israel have a right to exist?" Tapper asked again.

"Of course," Tlaib responded, before qualifying her answer.

"But just like Palestinians have a right to exist. Palestinians also have a right to human rights. We can't say one or the other. We have to say it in the same breath or we're not gonna actually have a peaceful resolution," she said.
