Rep. Ilhan Omar has split with current husband, report claims

The alleged separation comes as questions about the Democrat's marital history remain unanswered

The Daily Mail reported Friday that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and her current husband, Ahmed Hirsi, have separated.

The paper's claim comes as questions continue to circulate over whether the Somali-born Minnesota Democrat was previously married to her brother.

What are the details?

According to the Daily Mail, Omar has "dumped" Hirsi — the father of her three children — whom she has reportedly "married" twice.

It's complicated.

The couple was first "married" in a religious ceremony (without an official marriage license) in 2002, having two children before ending that stretch of their relationship in 2008. The next year, Omar legally married British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi two weeks after he arrived in the United States.

The Daily Mail reported that Elmi "has been identified as her brother by many media outlets, though due to a lack of records in their war-torn country of birth that has not been proven." Rumors that Omar married her brother in order to get him into the U.S. have dogged her since before she won a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2016.

Adding fuel to the speculation that Omar married Elmi in order to get him into the United States, the Daily Mail reported that at one point, Omar, Hirsi, and Elmi all lived under the same roof.

While Elmi and Omar were still legally married, she had her third child with Hirsi. In 2017, she divorced Elmi and went on to remarry Hirsi (legally) last year.

What else?

Omar has refused to address the issue head-on, and critics are urging the U.S. House Ethics Committee to investigate allegations of marriage fraud, immigration fraud, tax fraud, and other potential violations stemming from the rumored "sham" marriage.

Earlier this week, Judicial Watch, a Government watchdog group, filed a complaint with the House of Representatives' Office of Congressional Ethics, demanding a full investigation into the claims.

The congresswoman did not respond to the Daily Mail's request for comment, nor did her office respond to TheBlaze's request for comment on the Daily Mail's report.
