Here's how many Americans think the 70 percent tax plan from Ocasio-Cortez is a good idea

You might find this surprising

A surprising new poll reported how many Americans believe that the 70 percent tax rate for the top income margin is a good idea.

The policy was floated by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) in an interview on "60 Minutes" in early January. She has since been criticized roundly by those supporting lower taxes, including many on the right.

A new poll from The Hill and Harris X shows that the idea is not considered too radical by a majority of Americans.

More than a majority of voters, 59 percent, said they agreed with the concept.

The gender gap was prominent in the survey, as 62 percent of women supported the idea, while only 55 percent of men did. Another 38 percent of women rejected the idea, while 45 percent of men rejected it.

On you get to the tippy tops," Ocasio-Cortez explained, "on your ten millionth dollar, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60 or 70 percent."

"That doesn't mean all ten million dollars are taxed at an extremely high rate, but it means that as you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more," she concluded.

When the plan was called "radical" by Anderson Cooper, she eagerly embraced the description.

"I think that it only has ever been radicals that have changed this country," Ocasio-Cortez responded. "Yeah, if that's what radical means, call me a radical."

Critics of the plan argued that such a high rate would have adverse effects on the economy, while others made the argument that having such a high rate of taxation is immoral in itself.

The survey was taken after Ocasio-Cortez made the suggestion, and included a demographically representative cohort sample of registered voters. The survey has an error margin of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
