Republicans heckle Biden on border security failures after he mentions fentanyl crisis during State of the Union speech

Numerous Republican members of Congress heckled the State of the Union speech when President Joe Biden made a reference to the crisis of fentanyl overdoses.

The president had to pause and respond when Republicans yelled — while House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) tried to quiet the members of his party.

Biden was telling the story of Doug Griffin of Newton, New Hampshire, a father who lost his 20-year-old daughter to a fentanyl overdose.

"Courtney discovered pills in high school. And spiraled into addiction, and eventually death from a fentanyl overdose. She was just 20 years old. Describing the last 8 years without her, Doug said, 'There's no worse pain,'" Biden said.

"Yet their family's turned pain to purpose. Working to end the stigma, and change laws. He told us he wants to start a journey toward an American recovery. Doug, we're with you," he added.

"Fentanyl is killing more 70,000 Americans a year," said Biden.

Several Republicans interrupted Biden by yelling phrases, including, "The border!" and "It's from China!"

Others yelled, "It's your fault!" and "Secure the border!"

Biden paused for a second and responded, "You got it!"

He went on to list a number of criminal policies meant to help law enforcement officials end fentanyl overdoses in the U.S.

Elsewhere in his speech, he attempted to claim that some of his border policies had actually reduced illegal immigration from certain parts of Latin America.

"Since we launched our new border plan last month, unlawful migration from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela has come down 97%," said the president.

"We now have a record number of personnel working to secure the border, arresting 8,000 human smugglers and seizing over 23,000 pounds of fentanyl in just the last several months," he claimed. "But America's border problems won't be fixed until Congress acts."

Republicans also objected when Biden spoke in favor of some amnesty programs for illegal aliens already present in the U.S.
