'We must remove that country': Top Hamas official's honesty undermines argument for a ceasefire

Hamas spokesman Ghazi Hamad declared last week that nothing will stop Hamas from its goal of destroying Israel.

"Israel is a country that has no place on our land," Hamad said in an interview with a Lebanese TV station on Oct. 24.

"We must remove that country because it constitutes a security military and political catastrophe to the Arabic and Islamic nation and must be finished. We are not ashamed to say this with full force," he said. "We must teach Israel a lesson, and we will do this again and again. ... Will we have to pay a price? Yes, and we are ready to pay it. We are called a nation of martyrs, and we are proud to sacrifice martyrs."

Hamad said the alleged "occupation must end" not only in the Gaza Strip but in "all Palestinian lands." That means Hamas' goal, he admitted, is the "annihilation of Israel."

"The existence of Israel is illogical. The existence of Israel is what causes all that pain, blood, and tears. It is Israel — not us. We are victims of the occupation. Period," Hamad said.

"Therefore, nobody should blame us for the things we do. On Oct. 7, Oct. 10, Oct. 1,000,000 — everything we do is justified," he claimed.

Hamad's comments are eye-opening, terrifying, and refreshingly clear.

While much of the Western world is interested in drawing equivalencies between Hamas and the Israeli government, Hamad is honest and consistent. Those in Hamas do not believe Israel has a right to exist, and they believe it is their duty to destroy the Jewish people.

Moreover, Hamad undermined the argument for a ceasefire. Because Hamas is clear that it will not stop until Israel is destroyed, a ceasefire rewards Hamas because Israel would be the only party that abides by it. And with Israel hamstrung by a ceasefire, Hamas will likely launch many more Oct. 7s — just as Hamad promised.
