Gavin Newsom attempts a jab at states banning books and gets mercilessly ridiculed online

Democrat California Gov. Gavin Newsom tried to take a shot at states that banned books over controversial content, but he was roundly mocked and ridiculed online.

Newsom posted a photograph of himself reading one book with a pile of three others that had recently been the target of censorship in other states.

"Reading some banned books to figure out what these states are so afraid of," tweeted Newsom.

Among the books were "Maus," a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel about the Holocaust taken out of a public school's curriculum for reasons of profanity, nudity, and depictions of violence.

While the tweet got the approval of over 115k users who "liked" the tweet from Newsom, others took the occasion to rip into the governor.

"This is like that video of Lebron reading Malcolm X. Ask him the plot of the books," quipped Ben Shapiro.

"People are dunking on this, but i think it's very brave for gov. newsom to get around to finishing his 7th and 8th grade reading assignments. it's never too late to finish your education, governor!" joked Becket Adams.

"Posing for a picture because running on culture wars is better than my atrocious pandemic response," read one popular response.

"I, too, love to read all my books at the restaurant of the Indigo Hotel," replied writer Taylor Kay Phillips.

"He reading To Kill a Mockingbird and 1984 dawg hope you do well on your Middle School English class project," joked another user.

Some pointed out that Newsom included "To Kill a Mockingbird," which had been banned from schools in a California city over racist words used in the narrative.

Still others noted that it was those on the left who banned those books in some regions of the country.

"Yeah, uhm, it was woke Democrats that banned To Kill A Mockingbird from required school reading lists here in WA," replied Jason Rantz.

While Newsom was preoccupied with his misinformed book photo shoot, his Californians constituents suffered gas prices among the highest in the country, due in part to gas taxes that the Democrat-controlled legislature refuses to suspend.
