Female rights speaker kicked out of public library event for allegedly 'misgendering' during speech about biological men competing in women's sports

Over the weekend, a female rights advocate was silenced and kicked out of an event for allegedly "misgendering" after she attempted to give a speech explaining why biological men should not be able to compete in women's sports, the Daily Caller News Foundation reported.

Sophia Lorey, a former college athlete, was booted from the Mary L. Stephens Davis Library, a public library in Davis, California, on Sunday after being accused of "misgendering" during her speech.

As a member of the California Family Council, an organization advocating for fairness in female sports, Lorey was slated to speak at the public library during an event titled "Forum on FAIR AND SAFE Sports for GIRLS."

A video from the event showed that Lorey was interrupted less than two minutes into her speech by hecklers, who succeeded in derailing the meeting.

"Are you going to misgender people throughout the entire thing?" one individual asked Lorey.

Another individual off-camera chimed in, stating that Lorey would be removed if she 'misgendered,' per library policy. The audience responded by erupting into applause.

Erin Friday, a lawyer who identifies as a Democrat, according to the DCNF, then added, "We all have First Amendment rights whether you believe in what I believe or whether I believe in what you believe."

An attendee interrupted Friday, stating, "California state law recognizes trans women as women."

"Our policy talks about treating people with respect, and if you are misgendering somebody, that is not respectful," the individual continued.

The audience calmed down, and Lorey was able to momentarily continue the meeting before being cut off one last time.

Lorey mentioned that when she was a child, her goal was to become a college soccer player, but that girls today "cannot live out this same dream as long as men are allowed to compete in women's sports."

"Allowing biological men in women's sports does not create an equal playing field; it instead robs young biological girls of their athletic aspirations," she added.

Once again, the audience shouted over Lorey's speech and accused her of "misgendering."

Lorey attempted to continue, forced to talk over the rambunctious audience, but was told to leave the event, the video showed. Lorey identified the individual who instructed her to leave as Scott Love, the library's director.

Lorey told the DCNF, "Government officials don't have a right to shut down speech they don't like even if the speech is offensive to some. I believe males and females are different and stating that fact shouldn't have gotten me kicked out of an event. All I did was say that men are playing in women's sports. No one should be punished for stating a biological fact."

On Monday, competitive swimmer Riley Gaines responded to Lorey getting silenced and kicked out of the event.

"This is ridiculous, but not shocking....a female athlete silenced for calling a spade a spade. They won't even engage in a civil conversation. Props to this gal for sticking her ground," Gaines posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Lorey told Fox News' Sean Hannity that she is considering legal action over alleged free speech violations.

"It was extremely upsetting to have a government official violate my First Amendment rights, and I don't want any other American or any other girl to experience what I experienced last night," Lorey said.

The library did not respond to a request for comment, the DCNF reported.
