'This is preposterous!' CNN analyst shocks panel when he calls out DOJ for stalling Hunter Biden case

CNN legal analyst Elie Honig called out the Justice Department on Monday for slow-walking its investigation into Hunter Biden.

Federal authorities have been investigating Hunter Biden since 2018 for alleged tax crimes related to his overseas business dealings and for allegedly lying about his drug use on the federal form required when purchasing a firearm. The Washington Post reported last October — 8 months ago — that investigators believe they have enough evidence to charge the first son.

But nothing has happened since. And according to Honig, a former federal prosecutor, the timeline is unreasonable.

"This is preposterous!" he exclaimed Monday on CNN. "This has been pending, according to our reporting at CNN, since 2018 — five years."

The substance of the investigation — whether Biden committed tax crimes and lied on a federal document — is an investigation that should take skilled federal investigations just weeks to piece together, Honig said.

"But five years? I mean, that's a five-week investigation!" he explained. "Someone has got to make a call on this case. I don't know what is going on, but it's beyond anything I've seen before."

The comments come as multiple IRS whistleblowers allege the Justice Department has interfered into the Hunter Biden criminal investigation.

Gary Shapley, an IRS criminal supervisory special agent, told CBS News last month the investigation has been "slow-walked at the direction of the Department of Justice." He claimed there were "deviations" from the normal investigative process throughout the investigation, which he said "each and every time" benefitted the subject of the investigation.

Meanwhile, NBC News reported in April there is "growing frustration" within the FBI because investigators finished the bulk of their probe more than a year ago, but prosecutors have stalled charging Biden. The report said four charges are on the table: three related to tax crimes and the gun charge.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr expressed frustration over the delay last week, saying on Fox News he believes it is damaging the country.
