Drag queen show attendees love that parents brought their little children to get 'kids ... accustomed to' LGBTQ presence

Attendees of an outdoor, wintertime drag queen show in Grand Rapids, Michigan, expressed happiness that parents brought their little children to Saturday's “Winter’s a DRAG" event — because, as one person put it, doing so gets "kids ... accustomed to" an LGBTQ presence.

“Like, all bets are off, honestly," attendee Madison Hoffmann told WXMI-TV before busting out with a laugh.

"Yeah, there’s no rules. I would just say it’s a lot of fun. It’s good music. You come, you dance – even if you’re good, bad, whatever – who cares? Everybody just kind of accepts that it’s a fun day," she also told WXMI.

Hoffmann added to the station that “parents have their kids on their shoulders, which I think is absolutely amazing to get kids so accustomed to it."

James Krueger — another attendee who was holding a little girl in his arms — noted to WXMI that "it’s seriously so important for the future generations to understand equality and acceptance. ... It’s so positive and beautiful that the drag queens and what they represent is so near and dear to us, so we just wanted to share that with our little one, too."

Featured at the event were queens from Michigan Drag Brunch, the station said.

"It's not like [in] June all the queers drop from the sky and then July 1 we all go back," Hoffmann added to WXMI. "You know, we're here all year, so I think it's important to always celebrate that."

How are folks reacting?

A handful of commenters sounded off under the station's YouTube page about the event, and they didn't seem pleased about it:

• "I don’t think we [need] to be mean to anyone, but claims [that] this is normal ... [it's] simply NOT," one commenter said, adding that the drag show "absolutely shouldn’t be promoted to little children as normal. [It] just isn’t true; [you] shouldn’t lie to kids."
• "Stop indoctrinating children," another commenter wrote.
• "That kid looked happy to be there," another commenter noted before adding a decisive "not."
