'Devastating': Pregnant woman, 34, shot on downtown Seattle street in broad daylight; she and her unborn baby die at hospital

A 34-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn baby died Tuesday after the mother was shot in broad daylight on a downtown Seattle street, police said, adding that a 37-year-old man was wounded at the scene and is expected to survive.

What are the details?

West Precinct officers responded to multiple calls about shots fired at an occupied vehicle near Fourth Avenue and Lenora Street just after 11 a.m., police said.

Police found two people with gunshot wounds and provided emergency first aid to the victims until Seattle Fire arrived, police said.

Based on witness information, police found a suspect a short distance from the scene and took him into custody, authorities said, adding that a gun was recovered.

Medics transported a 34-year-old pregnant female with life-threatening injuries and a 37-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries to Harborview Medical Center, police said.

Just before 5 p.m., police announced that the pregnant woman had died at the hospital along with her unborn baby.

Homicide detectives are investigating the case, KING-TV reported, adding that police are still gathering details about what happened.

'Devastating'

"That's devastating, that's gotta be a nightmare," a woman told the station in regard to the shooting. "I felt terrible for the victims and their loved ones. I know this stuff happens every day in all parts of the city, and it's just a scary thing."

A spokesperson for the Downtown Seattle Association told KING it was a "tragic and senseless act. We’re grateful that Seattle Police were able to quickly apprehend a suspect and further violence was avoided. People deserve to feel safe in the heart of our city – we can’t accept the alternative."

Mayor Bruce Harrell addressed the shooting during a news conference about a different matter, the station reported: “I do want to recognize that within the last several hours, we suffered a tragedy downtown, on the streets of downtown Seattle. We don't know what motivated it. We do have the suspect. We do believe at this point, I think life was lost, and it's very sad."
