DC's Muriel Bowser says she's the proud mayor of 'the gayest city in the world'

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, has claimed that she is the proud mayor of the world's "gayest city."

"I am proud to be the Mayor of the best city in the world, and the gayest city in the world," Bowser declared in social media posts that also feature a video of her and others waving pride flags.

Bowser, who has served as the city's mayor since 2015, participated in an LGBT flag-raising event on Thursday.

A press release noted that the District of Columbia would "light up the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge with Pride colors" on June 1, as well as on June 10 and 11. "In addition to the bridge lighting, the District also will show support for LGBTQIA+ communities by wrapping 20 Capital Bikeshare bikes, a DC Circulator, and a DC Streetcar in pride flags," the press release read.

An Eventbrite listing invites people to walk with Bowser in the upcoming Capital Pride Parade.

Another Eventbrite post advertises an LGBT-related show. "Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs (MOLGBTQ) present the District of PRIDE Showcase," which will "will showcase why DC is home to the BEST QUEER PERFORMANCE ART in the nation," according to the post.

President Joe Biden recently issued another Pride Month proclamation — he has issued one each year since taking office.

The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Education are both featuring LGBT flags in their social media profiles. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has posted a banner to celebrate Pride Month on its social media accounts.
