Comedian Samantha Bee admits covering up for Andrew Cuomo because her liberal audience saw him as a 'dad' and a 'hero'

Comedian Samantha Bee admitted that she covered for former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo because her liberal audience saw him as a "hero" and a "dad."

Bee made the admission as a guest on the "Sway" podcast with journalist Kara Fisher.

"So it's not like — I was not a Cuomosexual, particularly," Bee said, referring to the slang word used by some fans of the former governor.

"And there were many, many times, actually, during the pandemic, where we had big, you know, show-wide conversations about, how do we handle Cuomo? Because he's super problematic," Bee continued.

"But the story about him out in the world was like, he's a hero," she added. "And he's the only person speaking about the pandemic in a fatherly way. And he is our dad and whatever."

Cuomo had been heralded by many on the left as the Democratic alternative to former President Donald Trump in relation to dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. That narrative quickly soured after numerous accusations of sexual harassment and assault forced Cuomo to step down from his office Aug. 24. He has denied many of the accusations and tried to explain away others.

Bee now admits she covered for Cuomo in order to keep her liberal audience.

"And so it felt [like] a place where it wasn't quite the time to be like, hey, just like, check it out, he's actually an a**hole," Bee explained. "We felt like we would just miss completely with our audience. And people weren't really there to hear that at that moment..."

In one video from Bee's show in March 2020, Cuomo is specifically referred to as "America's Dad," and he is lionized even as he complains about not being able to hug and kiss people because of the coronavirus social distancing guidelines.

"We are just a few weeks into America's battle with COVID-19 and Andrew Cuomo is ready to turn this car around," read the description to the video.

One commenter on the video at the time compared Cuomo favorably to Trump.

"Andrew Cuomo is America Dad," the comment read. "He's taking better care of New York by acting like an adult. Un like our federal government who's acting like a spoiled child! We really need Andrew Cuomo in charge of the USA right now."
