Coffee shop employee accused of placing hidden camera in men's restroom 'to record men he found attractive'

An employee at a Florida coffee shop with perhaps an all-too-appropriate name was placed under arrest after a patron discovered a hidden camera in the men's restroom.

On February 13, a male visitor to We Spy Coffee & More in Tarpon Springs, Florida, about 30 miles northwest of Tampa, made a stop in the men's restroom. While there, he discovered a cellphone hidden under the sink and facing the toilet. The man then confronted 31-year-old Spyridon Voulgarakis, an "employee/business partner" at We Spy Coffee & More whom local business owners casually call "Spy."

Officer Stephen Gibson of the Tarpon Springs police soon afterward arrived on the scene, at which time, the victim showed him footage taken by the camera. The officer confirmed that the phone had captured the victim using the toilet and that the man's genitals were visible on the video footage.

Spy Voulgarakis was arrested on Saturday. After he was apprised of his Miranda rights, Voulgarakis admitted to placing the phone in the restroom "to record men he found attractive," according to the arrest affidavit. He also stated that he knew that recording people without their permission was "illegal" but that he had done it anyway "for the purpose of self-gratification," the affidavit said. The suspect estimated that he had recorded approximately 10 people without their consent using that same method.

Police are now searching for other possible victims. "If you’ve been to 'We Spy Coffee & More' since February 13th, 2023, and used the male restroom and feel you may be a victim please contact Det. J. Melton at 727.938.2849," said a press release.

Voulgarakis has been charged with battery and video voyeurism, and his bond has been set at $5,000. Though the details of the charges are unclear, it is possible that Voulgarakis could face up to six years in prison if convicted.

Representatives at We Spy Coffee & More did not respond to requests for comment from Law & Crime or WTSP-TV.
