Video: Police accidentally shoot innocent bystanders at bus stop while firing at suspect who stabbed a man in the face

Albuquerque police accidentally shot two bystanders waiting at a bus stop while they pursued a suspect who allegedly stabbed a man at a drive-thru, according to Breaking911.

Police reportedly responded at around 9:23 p.m. on June 29, 2023, to a call about a stabbing at a McDonald's drive-thru. Police found a man who suffered multiple stab wounds in the neck and face while he was waiting in the fast food line.

The man allegedly told police that he had picked up a stranger that he wanted to help by purchasing him some food, which he has done for others in the past, according to online channel PoliceActivity.

The suspect reportedly leaned over to the victim and said "sorry" before he stabbed him in the neck. He then fled the scene. Officers arrived and gave first aid to the victim, who was then transported to a hospital.

Approximately two and a half hours later, officers were seen on body camera footage following the suspect down a local road. They reportedly identified him as matching the description of the suspect from the previous incident. He was said to be holding a colored knife while wearing a backpack that appeared to be pink.

As police yelled at the suspect to drop his knife, he approached a bus stop where three men were standing. The suspect, 25-year-old Jeramiah Salyards, was allegedly "waving his arms rapidly toward the three men" before officers opened fire.

Police accidently shot two of the bystanders; one was shot in the knee, while another man in a blue jacket was shot several times and reportedly suffered serious injuries. Suspect Salyards died from the shooting.

The man shot in the knee was treated at a hospital and released the same night. The man in the blue jacket was reportedly in the hospital for a period of several weeks and has continued rehabilitation since his release.

The man who was stabbed at the McDonald's was also released from the hospital, but details are not known.

The suspect, Jeramiah Salyards, was apparently no stranger to violent incidents. He had allegedly been sentenced to three years in prison for a previous stabbing of an Albuquerque bus driver in 2020.

Salyards was released from prison just over a month before the 2023 incident.
