Biden admin to allow up to 1,450 migrants per day into US via CBP app after expanding asylum-seeker program again

The Biden administration’s Customs and Border Protection recently announced the expansion of its CBP One mobile application that allows migrants to request an appointment to seek asylum in the United States.

This latest update, announced by CBP on June 30, marks the second time the program has been expanded in less than two months.

“CBP is expanding the number of available appointments at ports of entry for the second time in less than two months, through scheduling enhancements and operational efficiencies,” said Troy A. Miller, a senior official performing the duties of commissioner. “By utilizing innovative technologies like CBP One™, we are improving the delivery of our homeland security mission and providing for safe and efficient processes at ports of entry.”

Earlier this year, Biden stated that the app would allow CBP to admit up to 360,000 migrants into the U.S. yearly. With the most recent expansion of the app, up to 522,000 asylum seekers — a 45% increase — could be accepted annually.

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection today announced the expansion of available appointments for noncitizens through the CBP One™ app to 1,450 per day, up from 1,250. This represents a nearly 50 percent increase from May 12 when CBP processed 1,000 appointments per day,” CBP stated in a recent press release.

Once admitted into the US, migrants are then supposed to attend an asylum hearing in court, but due to unprecedented high demand, court dates are being scheduled years down the road.

The agency touted the controversial CBP One app as a “safe, orderly, and humane process for noncitizens to access ports of entry.” However, the app has repeatedly come under fire for enabling the Biden administration to circumvent legal entry processes.

Additionally, migrants have supposedly found a loophole in the program that allows them to skip scheduling appointments via the app, according to the New York Post. The outlet stated that the app allows migrants with “language barriers, illiteracy or technical issues” to arrive at a point of entry to request an appointment.

Republican Senator Josh Hawley called the scheduling program a “concierge service” for illegal migrants.

Eighteen states filed a lawsuit challenging the administration’s CBP app, claiming it “will increase the number of unlawful aliens in the United States by guaranteeing a quicker path to quasi-legal status in the United States (with accompanying work permits and access to entitlement programs and social services).”

A separate lawsuit over the app filed by Texas claimed the administration is “illegally pre-approving” migrants and allowing them to travel freely within the U.S.
