Ben Carson says he talked to President Trump about Rep. Cummings and Baltimore — here's how he replied

Carson cuts through the partisan online outrage

Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson said that he talked to President Donald Trump about his feud with Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) over the city of Baltimore and how to help the ailing city.

Carson made the comments while speaking to Tucker Carlson on his Fox News show Monday.

He said that during his time in Baltimore as pediatric neurosurgeon that he felt terrible because the children he would help were forced to go back to homes with rats, roaches, ticks, and mold, which he said was typical in some parts of Baltimore.

"You know while I was there I worked on a lot of issues with many politicians, including Elijah Cummings, you know particularly in terms of childhood education and improving the lives of the people," said Carson.

"I don't think Elijah Cummings is a bad person, I think he's working hard to actually help people. And I certainly don't think President Trump is a bad person, he's working very hard," he added.

Carson said that he spoke to the president about working with Cummings.

"In fact I asked him today, 'Would you be willing to work with Elijah Cummings to bring some relief to the people of Baltimore?' He said he would be happy to," Carson said.

"But in the meantime, it's gonna continue with the programs, you know like the opportunity zones, which get people to take money and invest it in the areas that are distressed. There are 149 of them in Maryland," explained Carson.

The president has assailed Cummings for heading up investigations into his administration while his district in Baltimore suffers from many of the maladies afflicting big cities. This spurred social media outrage between critics of the president calling the comments racist, with supporters of the president pointing out that the city does indeed have a problem.

In the interview, Carson also addressed the issue of fatherless homes as part of the problem plaguing cities like Baltimore.
