Oklahoma man arrested for allegedly torturing his 4-month-old baby to death

Oklahoma police filed second-degree homicide charges against a man for allegedly torturing his 4-month-old baby to death.

On Jan. 8, Xylon Adams was taken by his mother to Saint Francis Children's hospital with numerous injuries, including a broken femur.

Medical staff reported to police that the child was suffering from rib fractures, global brain injuries, swelling in the brain, lack of oxygen, multiple leg fractures, and a bilateral jaw fracture.

Police were initially told that the child was in the care of several family members when the injuries occurred, but they determined that information to be incorrect.

Investigators said that the injuries were incurred while the child was in the care of Daquan White, his 22-year-old father.

One Jan. 9, White was arrested for an outstanding warrant and he was questioned by police about his hospitalized son. TPD says that White admitted to abusing the child while trying to quiet him.

Two days later, the boy died.

Police charged White with second-degree murder, child abuse, and child neglect.

"He tortured that baby," said Jill Sallee, a detective with the Child Crisis Unit to KOKI-TV. "He adamantly denied, repeatedly denied, that anything had happened."

White had been involved in a previous incident where police were called to a residence about shots fired. He came out of the home while holding another of his children and yelled at officers. Police were able to subdue him and found a pistol in his possession.

"You start thinking, as a person, is this man using his own child as a shield, so that officers don't use force on him? You know, what kind of person is this?"

White received a suspended sentence for that incident because he agreed to participate in a treatment program, but a year later, he has been accused of killing his child.

"He has relinquished his right to be in our community," said Salle of White. "He doesn't belong in society."
