Ocasio-Cortez goes on the attack against Joe Biden, says he will lose to President Trump

"It's no secret that I kind of called for eliminations..."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) came out swinging against Democratic primary frontrunner Joe Biden, who she says is too mainstream and not progressive enough to defeat President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

"Listen I think we need a progressive president," said Ocasio-Cortez in an interview published Thursday.

"I think a progressive president can A, beat Trump," she added, "as much as people think that that's not possible, I think it's the only way, I really believe the only way we're going to be able to beat this president is with a progressive candidate.

She said that a the Democratic candidate needed to endorse Medicare-for-all, tuition-free colleges, and a $15 minimum wage.

"We need [a candidate] that isn't bought by corporations, I mean I think that's the huge thing, we need one that isn't beholden to Wall Street. And that, to me, narrows the field significantly from the twenty-odd people that are in there right now," she laughed.

"It's no secret that I kind of called for eliminations," she added.

She went on to agree with her interviewer that it was "patently untrue" that Biden was the most progressive candidate with the most progressive record, as he has claimed in order to undermine criticism from his left.

"The term progressive is getting hijacked so much that people just think it means 'Democrat' now," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "And not all Democrats are progressive. And I'm sorry but if you're gonna come out in saying that you support the Hyde Amendment, which prevents us from funding clinics like Planned Parenthood, that's not progressive, that's not a progressive position."

Biden said that he did not support the repeal of the Hyde Amendment and was criticized heavily by the pro-abortion wing of the party.

"And you know what, if your pride is being a moderate centrist candidate, then go out and say that," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Say, 'I'm proud to be a centrist, I'm proud to be funded by Wall Street, I'm proud to not push as hard as I can on women's rights.' Say it, own it, be it.

"But don't kind of come out here and say you're a progressive candidate but at the same time, um, not support repealing something as basic as the Hyde Amendment," she concluded.

Biden has maintained a large lead over the far more progressive candidate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) who is in second place.
