'A great deal of concern': High school student calls for AI regulations after fake nude images of her shared online

A New Jersey high school student has apparently started pushing for federal legislation that would address AI-generated pornographic images after she said photos of her and other female classmates were digitally manipulated and shared online.

Francesca Mani, 14, who attends Westfield High School, and her mother have expressed their discontent with the lack of legal action available to victims of AI-generated pornography. The use of child sex abuse material has taken on a new form since the advent of artificial intelligence, which appears to allow predators to manipulate sexual images of underage children.

Francesca said she was just one among more than 30 female students at the high school who may have had their photos manipulated and shared publicly. As a result, she is demanding that the school and local and state governments take action against the behavior, according to CNN.

The report noted that school administrators were made aware of the incident on October 20, when it was brought to their attention that images of underage students allegedly had been publicly shared over the summer.

“There was a great deal of concern about who had images created of them and if they were shared,” Principal Mary Asfendis wrote in a letter to students and parents. “At this time, we believe that any created images have been deleted and are not being circulated. This is a very serious incident.”

The high school carried out its own investigation concerning the incident, and the Westfield Police Department was also notified about the incident. School spokesperson Mary Ann McGann said that the school is not able to provide details about the findings or disciplinary action taken, as matters involving students are confidential.

Blaze News reported on the incident last week, noting that at least one male student at the high school was involved in taking publicly available photos of the girls and running them through an AI tool that produced fake nude photos.

One female student said that she cried at first, "and then I decided I should not be sad." She went on to say it was important for her to advocate for herself "and the other victims."

"We're aware that there are creepy guys out there," she continued, "but you'd never think one of your classmates would violate you like this."

The advent of more advanced technologies allows fake and misleading images possible to make with just a flew clicks of the computer mouse.

It is currently unknown how many boys were possibly involved in the creation of the fake images.
