7-year-old girl killed in drive-by shooting while at a McDonald’s drive-through

'Y'all, please put the guns down'

A 7-year-old girl is dead after a hail of gunfire struck her father's vehicle while the two were at a Chicago-area McDonald's drive-through anticipating a meal together.

What are the details?

Authorities say that the child, Jaslyn Adams, and her 29-year-old father, Jontae Adams, had just pulled up to the drive-through when two people exited a nearby vehicle and sprayed the car with bullets. Jaslyn and her father — who were both struck by the bullets — were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Jontae survived, but his young daughter — who was struck "multiple times" according to reports — did not.

WBBM-TV reports that roughly 30 shell casings were found near the vehicle.

At the time of this reporting, no suspects have been publicly identified.

Jaslyn's aunt, Tawny McMullen, told WBBM that the family remembers the child as being "sweet and outgoing."

"Really lovable," she added. "Y'all, please put the guns down. Our kids want to play. My kids can't even go out the door because of this violence. Please put the guns down."

In a statement on the shooting, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) said, "I am heartbroken and angered that a 7-year-old child was killed this afternoon on Chicago's West Side. This unthinkable act of violence has no place here. The epidemic of gun violence cutting our children's lives short cannot go on."

What else?

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the shooting was believed to be gang-related. Less than three hours later, two people were shot at a Popeyes in Humboldt Park. Two people — a man and a woman — were injured in the second shooting and were taken to a nearby hospital in serious and critical conditions. Investigators believe that the Popeyes shooting is connected to the McDonald's shooting that took place earlier that day.
